Funeral services for Nick Gawrylow, 98, formerly of Belfield, will be 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 12, 2010, at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson, ND, with Pastor Tim Voth officiating. Burial will be later this spring in St. John’s Ukrainian Cemetery in Belfield. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Friday at Stevenson Funeral Home.
Nick passed away on Monday, March 8, 2010, at the Medcenter One Mandan Living Center.
Nick Gawrylow was born May 15, 1911, to Pete and Dorothy (Olienyk) Gawrylow in Billings County, ND. He grew up on the family homestead and attended country school. After schooling and working on the farm he moved to Chicago to go to mechanic school at International Harvester. He returned to the area working as a mechanic before getting drafted into the Army. He served as a medic in the South Pacific in WWII. After completing an engineering course in the Army he returned to North Dakota and worked on projects in the Dickinson area, such as St. Patrick’s Church and St. Joseph’s Hospital. On December 5, 1946, he married Carol Dutchuk at St. Peter’s Church at Gorham, ND. The two made their home in Belfield until Carol passed away. Nick lived in Dickinson and throughout North Dakota working as a builder and master carpenter for many years. Upon retirement, Nick resided in Zap, and in recent years, was a resident of MedCenter One Mandan Living Center in Mandan.
Nick also loved tinkering with cars. He was involved with building numerous homes, churches and schools in North Dakota. He enjoyed dancing and playing the violin, many of which he handcrafted. Nick was a member of the Eagles Club in Dickinson and the American Legion of Belfield.
Nick is survived by his son, Alton Gawrylow, Zap; daughter-in-law, Rhonda Gawrylow, Dickinson; grandchildren, Dustin, Robert and Autumn Gawrylow; great-granddaughter, Caea Serna; sister Ella Gawrylow, Belfield; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Nick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Carol; and numerous brothers and sisters.
