Alex passed away Saturday, April 1, 2023 at Sanford Health in Bismarck with his family by his side.
Alexander Ray Lazorenko was born in Fayette, ND on July 10, 1941 to Alek and Mary (Kohanes) Lazorenko. Alex was the youngest of four children. At the age of 6 months, his family moved to a farm southwest of Killdeer, where Alex resided for 70 years. Alex attended Killdeer Public School and graduated in 1960. He was involved in track and field, band, and choir.
Alex was proud to drive a black 1961 Meteor 800 Mercury. His “Black Beauty” was how he caught his bride, Florine Schwindt. They married on June 14, 1963, and made their home together on the family farm, where they raised their two children, Sandee and Scott. In 2011, they moved to Killdeer where they resided until 2022. At that time, they purchased a home and moved back to the country “Alex’s favorite place.”
Alex had many health related issues throughout his life, but that never stopped him from being a successful farmer/rancher. Alex and Florine believed in hard work and determination, and those ethics were passed down to their children and grandchildren.
Alex also believed in community growth and prosperity. He served on many boards including: Dunn County Soil Conservation Board for 45 years, West Dunn Fire Protection District Board, St. John’s Lutheran Church Council and Choir, Lion’s Club, Farmer’s Union Oil Company, and was a West Dunn Fireman for 30 years.
Alex loved to visit no matter where he went and who he saw. He also loved to joke around. His favorite time of the year was branding season. He loved to entertain his help with apple pie red eye when the work was done.
Alex loved all animals, especially dogs. He carried dog treats in every vehicle. When he went to his children or grandchildren’s houses, the dogs were the first to get his attention.
Alex is survived by his wife, Florine; his children, Sandee Pittsley of Killdeer and Scott Lazorenko of Killdeer; grandchildren, Tyler, Brock, and Zane Pittsley of Killdeer, Aaliyah and McKinley Lazorenko of Killdeer; nephew, Ronnie (Bobbi) Lazorenko of Killdeer; niece, Illabelle (George) Orvalla of Arizona; and many cousins.
Alex is preceded in death by his parents, Alek and Mary; brother, William Lazorenko; sisters, Helen Steffen and Elsie Lazorenko; son-in-law, Dave Pittsley; nephew, Kevin Steffen; niece, Beth Reems; parents-in-law, Ed and Theresa Schwindt; in-laws, Irvin Steffen, Norene Gunwall, Sammy and Angie Chays, Val and Shirley Schwindt, Kevin Olson, and Londell Olson.
