Charlotte Schmautz

A Funeral Service for Charlotte Schmautz, 94, of New Salem will be held at 11:00 a.m CT., Friday, February 16, 2024 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Hebron with Father Gary Benz officiating. Burial will follow at the Congregational Cemetery in Hebron. 

Visitation for Charlotte will be thirty minutes prior to the service at the funeral home.

Charlotte passed away Wednesday, February 7, 2024 at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem. 

Charlotte Elaine Schmautz was born February 15, 1929, in New Salem, daughter of William and Mary Schwinkendorf. She joined her family of four brothers and one sister. Charlotte was raised and educated in New Salem.

On October 13, 1951, she married LaVern “Trigger” Schmautz in Mandan, ND. They moved to the farm in rural Glen Ullin, in 1955, which was previously owned by LaVern’s parents. They resided there until moving into Glen Ullin where they stayed until January of 1992. They then purchased a condo in Bismarck and moved there.

On April 28, 2006, LaVern passed away. Charlotte stayed on in the condo until February of 2022 when she entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center until May of 2022. She then transferred to Elm Crest Manor in her native New Salem, where she resided until her passing on February 7, 2024. Charlotte was fortunate to have such good care and attention there, enabling her to reunite with old friends, one even from her early childhood, LaVonne Borner.

Having no children of her own, she devoted resources to animals, especially a fondness for dogs. She was an avid reader and liked to go to the casinos whenever possible.

Preceding her in death were: LaVern, her husband; all of her siblings; her brother-in-law and wife, Allen and Jean; and nieces and nephews.

Surviving are her sister-in-law, Shirley (Francis) Tibor; niece and godchild, Mona (Tom) Magilke; nieces, Shelley (Gary) Sailer, Stacey Wilcox, Wendy Krein, Tracy Tibor, Debbie (Tom) Schmautz.
