Cheryl passed away Thursday, December 9, 2021 at CHI St. Alexius in Dickinson.

Cheryl was born on May 7, 1947, in Glendive, Montana, to Alf and Delaine (Jendro) Helvik, the first of three children. She was raised and educated in Wibaux, Montana, graduating from Wibaux County High School in 1965. Cheryl began working for the USDA at the FSA office in Beach, North Dakota.

Cheryl married Alex L. (Ike) McCaskey on January 15, 1977, making their home in Beach. To this union, two sons, Cory and Chad, were born. Cheryl “retired” (the first time) from the USDA in 1980 to care for the boys. In 1986, when they were both in school, she was asked to return “temporarily” to the USDA, and remained in that position until her final retirement in 2005.

Cheryl was a very spiritual, prayerful person who had a deep faith and believed in God. She had a big heart and would reach out to those who seemed to need someone to talk to, and would do whatever she could to help. She sent a lot of flowers and cards for birthdays, special occasions, or just because. She was an excellent cook, an avid reader, and loved flowers, especially geraniums, which she learned to care for from her Gramma Jendro.

In 2008, her grandson Hunter was born. From day one, he meant the world to her and was her “number one man.” She always looked forward to his visits and he would help her with the flower garden and holiday decorating. She always had some kind of arts and crafts project for them to work on.
Cheryl had a very deep love for all her family members and they were always on her mind. She will be deeply missed.

Cheryl is survived by her husband, Alex; sons, Cory and Chad; grandson, Hunter; brothers, Larry (Peg) Helvik and Kim Helvik, both of Wibaux, MT; sister-in-law, Jean Lechler of Gilette, WY; brother-in-law, Jim McCaskey of Whitewood, SD; and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and several very close friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Alf and Delaine; brother-in-law, Tony Lechler; sister-in-law, Sandy Helvik; and father and mother-in-law, Alex and Yvette “Dotchie” McCaskey.
