Darrel was born in a two story farmhouse 3 miles south of Ollie, MT on August 8, 1933 to Carl and Elsie (Granhaug) Rost. As a young boy he worked selling the Grit paper and earned 3 cents per paper sold. He also worked for Farmers Union Oil Co-op, at the grocery store for Alfred and Jackie Sipe and for many local farmers. He and his five brothers and three sisters were raised on the farm until 1947 when Ollie High School closed the year Darrel was to start high school. Darrel then chose to attend Baker High School. During High School he had many jobs to include; poisoning prairie dogs, and driving truck for the county. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church while in high school and graduated in 1951 from BHS. After graduation he found himself in Bozeman, MT and when work was hard to come by moved back to Baker. He found steady work at the Lowe Ranch south of Rhame, ND.

Darrel was lucky to come across Jacqualine R Hickey not once but twice. First time in the 1940’s and again in 1952 at an Easter Monday dance in Marmarth, ND. Darrel and Jackie married in Baker on Aug. 15, 1954. They lived and worked on the Lowe’s Ranch for a few years. Then it was on to Baker, MT. where Darrel worked for Jacobs Trucking and Dray Line. On November 9, 1959 Darrel went to work for MDU working in the natural gas field north of Baker and then eight years later their family that had now grown to include three children, Ricky, Lona and Scott. They all moved to Cabin Creek, and in 1968, their family became complete with the birth of Darcy.

Darrel and Jackie moved to Miles City in 1995 after his retirement from WBI/MDU where he worked for 35 years and 10 months.

He enjoyed riding horseback, breaking horses, pitching horseshoes, basketball (attending many 4-C tournaments), bowling, carpentry, smoking cigarettes, drinking coffee, babysitting nieces, nephews, grandchildren, celebrating his annual 29th birthday, dancing and especially spending time with Jackie and the rest of the family.
