Donald John Schantz was born on December 13, 1931, in Morton County, North Dakota, to George and Tecla (Anton) Schantz. He grew up on the family farm attending country school and later Glen Ullin High School. After School Donald continued to work on the family farm. It was during this time that he met Lorraine Himmerich and the two were married on September 22, 1953.
The couple made their home on the farm southwest of Glen Ullin. It was here where they made their living and raised their children, Sharon and Kevin. The country was where Donald felt most at home, he thrived in the peaceful rural lifestyle. Weather riding one of his motorcycles or driving his fourwheeler, he was always on the go, checking out the countryside. Donald was a very gifted fabricator, spending countless hours in the shop modifying most of his farm equipment and vehicles. He was also very skilled at making model airplanes out of aluminum cans.
Donald cherished is time at Lake Tschida, fishing, camping, water skiing and in the winter time, snow skiing. A trip to the farm always involved a "quick game of whist" with Grandpa. His competitive spirit spilled into his games of scrabble that usually need a webster's decision to determine the winner.
Donald's family was his pride and joy, he loved time together with his children, and all of his grandchildren.
Donald is survived by his children, Sharon (Doug) Grinsteiner of Mandan; Kevin (Charlotte) Schantz of Glen Ullin; 9 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 8 step-great-grandchildren, and one step-great-great-grandchild; Siblings, Patsy, George, JoAnn, Bonnie, Carolyn, and Nick.
