Esther Ruth was born on a farm in Jud ND on August 10, 1935, daughter of Jacob and Christina (Rudolph) Schlecht. She came into the world with the help of a neighbor lady and her older sister. Esther's family farmed and she enjoyed the cows, horses, cats and dogs while she was growing up. She enjoyed working alongside her father on the farm. At the age of 5, her mother taught her to play the pump organ. She was later blessed with a piano and took piano lessons for many years. As an adult she blessed her church with her musical talent. She attended many of her first years in country school before attending school in Edgeley. Any musical class was always her favorite. Ruth met Olaf Sandvick at Dakota Business College in Fargo. They were united in marriage on December 26, 1954. Together they moved to Columbus and Olaf went to work for Burke Divide Electric. They were blessed to start their family there before moving to Dickinson. Their son, Duane, was joined by sister, Renae, and brother, John. Esther and her family enjoyed bowling, where she bowled weekly for many years. Her life was also revolved around her church. She taught Sunday School and loved singing every Sunday with the choir. She was a member of the Women's Circle and she loved her six beautiful lady friends who participated in a Bible Study where they enjoyed their friendship around coffee and dessert. Esther was also a member of Dickinsons' Lion Club.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Backpack Program, Badlands Bible Camp, or a charity of your choice in Ruth's name.
