Eva Brueni

A funeral Mass for Eva Marie Brueni, 92, of Dickinson, will be at 9:30 a.m., Friday, January 10, 2020 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in South Heart with Father Shane Campbell celebrating. Burial will take place in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.


Visitation for Eva will be from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Thursday, January 9, 2020 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a Rosary and Vigil Service taking place at 5:00 p.m.


Eva passed away Sunday, December 29, 2019 at St. Luke’s Home, Dickinson.


Eva Marie was born northeast of Belfield on December 25, 1927, the daughter of Wasyl (a.k.a William) and Catherine (Obach) Jakubowsky. She graduated from Belfield High School, and continued her education at Dickinson State Teacher’s College to earn a teaching certificate. She taught country school in eastern Montana for a year. On June 15, 1948, Eva married John Brueni in New England, North Dakota. The couple was blessed with six children, and lived on the Brueni farm north of South Heart. Eva was a devoted mother and wife. She enjoyed traveling, quilting, Brazilian Embroidery, knitting and making Ukranian Easter eggs. She loved raising her chickens, ducks and geese, as well as her flower and vegetable gardens. In 1974, the family moved to a small farm in northern Missouri. Eva loved her time there and made many life-long friends. They returned to North Dakota in 1977. Eva was a faith-filled woman, serving as a member of St. Mary’s Christian Mothers for many years and participated in weekly Holy Adoration. Eva will be dearly missed.


Eva is survived by her children, Leland Brueni of Tinton Falls, NJ, David (Cindy) Brueni of Oro Valley, AZ, Bonnie (Francis Schoeder) Brueni of Chicago, IL, LaDonna (James) Higgins of St. Louis, MO, Gary Brueni of Dickinson, Dennis (Melanie) Brueni of Meridian, ID; six grandchildren, Jared Brueni, Catherine (Irwin) Leopando, Austin Schoeder, Maureen Higgins, Sonya Higgins and Hannah Wiegle; two great-grandchildren, Julia and Henry Leopando; nine siblings, John, Frank, Agatha (Ray) Lipovac, Amelia Schweitzer, Bill, Margaret Fleckenstein, Mary (Phil) Colozzi, Nick, Antonia (Norman) Heinert.


She was preceded in death by her parents, Wasyl and Catherine Jakubowsky; husband, John Brueni (2016); granddaughter, Attessa Brueni; three siblings, Elizabeth Andriash and infants, Janice and Anton; brothers-in-law, John Schweitzer, Anton Fleckenstein and Bill Andriash.


The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to the staff at St. Luke’s Nursing Home, Park Avenue Villa, and St. Alexius Hospital, for the kind and compassionate care of their mother. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the American Heart Association
