Evelyn Wehner

Funeral Mass for Evelyn Wehner, 90 of Dickinson, ND, will be 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Dickinson, with Father Robert Shea celebrating. Burial will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation for Evelyn will take place from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at Stevenson Funeral Home, Dickinson, with Rosary and Vigil service taking place at 6:00 p.m.

Evelyn passed away Thursday, September 3, 2026 at Chi. St. Alexius Health Center, Dickinson.

Evelyn Theresia Miller was born on March 7, 1936, to Joseph M and Rose Marie (Hutmacher) Miller on the family farm south of Dickinson. She attended school at Frenzel School District and St. Joseph's Grade School for 1st Communion and Confirmation. Evelyn was unable to attend high school but proudly earned her G.E.D in 1984.

Evelyn married Richard J. Wehner on August 17, 1953, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Dickinson, ND. They became members of St. Wenceslaus Church in 1960.

Two children were born to this marriage, Karen K. in July of 1954 and Darryl J. in April of 1957.

Mom was a stay at home mother, who loved to bake for her children. We remember coming home after school and sneaking into the kitchen on the floor to snitch donut holes when she made spudnuts. Of course, they were conveniently on that side of the cupboard where we could reach up. She also had a sixth sense about things and was able to guess her gifts. One time she told Darryl that he had better move the gift with the chocolates away from the heat so they wouldn't melt and she couldn't eat them! She encouraged us to try new things and was always there cheering for us whether it was for choir, band, Boy Scouts, Campfire, Junior Catholic Daughters, or any of the other activities and clubs we participated in.

After we were out of High School Mom began working at several motels in Dickinson-the NoDak, Super 8, and Select Inns, from 1977-1993. She then worked for Service Master from 1993-1995.

She and Richard belonged to the local and national AARP, the Stark County Historical Society, the Sunset Senior Center, the German-Hungarian Lodge, and RSVP. Through RSVP she volunteered, along with Dad, at various sites, especially the Arc-Aid, SW Health Clinics, the Pioneer Machinery Building, and St. Ben's. They also volunteered at the Sheriff's Dept. doing fingerprinting and wrapping gifts at the Mall at Christmas time. They also belonged to the Theodore Roosevelt Amateur Radio Club. Mom's call sign was KC0HKR. She was a leader for Karen's Campfire Girls group in the 60's, on the nominating committee for AARP for 3 years, on the council at the Sunset Center, and on the board of the Historical Society. She also served as a director of the AARP locally.

Evelyn was very talented. At one time Karen told her she had no talents, and she proceeded to make a list of her talents. It was at least 3 notebook pages, on both sides! She was a wonderful seamstress, sewing not only for the family, but other people as well. She even sewed our coats (Karen's first store bought coat came on her 16th birthday), and she even took a course on sewing underwear, slips, and swimsuits. She did all of the painting on Dad's woodcarvings and created hundreds of ornaments out of light bulbs for the various holidays. We looked forward to these ornaments every year. She made hundreds of rosaries, and they have gone all over-Kenya, Alaska, Washington, to name a few. She made rosaries for the first communion classes at St. Wenceslaus for 34 years, with this past spring's being the last class to receive them. She looked forward to attending the rehearsal with the students every year.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Richard in 2021, her in-laws Peter and Elsie Wehner, her brothers and sisters-in-law, John(Maggie), Florian, Joseph (Donna) , Arthur (Pauline), Frank, and Michael, her sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna, Laura (George) Weiler, Elizabeth (Henry) Kuntz, Rose Mary (Adam) Kuntz, Dorothy(Bill) Tormaschy, and Lucille (Victor) Tormaschy.

She is survived by her children Karen (Rick) Ziegler and Darryl (Naomi) Wehner, her Grandchildren Brandon (Carly) Wehner, Amanda Booke (Justin Dockter) and Ryan (Amber) Ziegler, and her Great Grandchildren, Reed Wehner, Kylie Booke, Carter Ziegler, Laci Ziegler, and Emari Wolf, as well as her sister Catherine Machunzie and sister-in-law Loretta Miller.

The family wants to thank the CHI ED staff, and the Med-Surg nurses and aides, as well as the physicians and PA who took such wonderful care of our mother and grandmother. A big thank you also to the many staff members who were there every day with a listening ear and a shoulder to cry on. This is never an easy journey, but you were always there for us, looking out for our needs as well as Mom's.
