Irene Ruth (Wiege) Hausauer entered her heavenly home on February 19th, 2026 at the young age of 97. Mom told me that she thought 100 would be a pretty good number, but God said Dad was getting a little hard to handle and it was time for her to come home and let dad know that she's still the boss. Like her younger brother said "Irene is pretty good at pulling hair and twisting ears". My sister and I can verify that is a true statement. Mom would give us a curfew and let me say one thing, you didn't want to be one minute late, cause she was awaiting.
Mom was born on September 9th, 1928 on the family farm south of Hebron, ND to Fredrick (Fred) Wiege and Magdalena (Scheuffele) Wiege. Mom attended country school grades 1-8 and got her 8th grade diploma after having to take Geography twice. We think that is why she was not a world traveler. Back in those days, babies were born at home and Mom's mom Magdalena was a midwife. So when a baby was due, the father would come to the farmhouse and pick Magdalena up and Mom had to go with to entertain the younger kids until the baby was born. Mom witnessed many of her nieces and nephews that were born at home. When Mom turned 16, she rented a room from Grandma Lutz's apartments and worked during the winter months at the Bluebird Cafe in Hebron. Once spring came, she went back home and drove the old Ford tractor to get the seeding done and then help her mom with the cooking, baking, and cleaning for the threshing crews. Mom and her younger brother Emil were inseparable and grew up to both be stubborn Germans. Nothing was done correctly unless they did it their way. This included cleaning, ironing, and even eating. A perfect daily meal included a bowl of Cheerios, a bowl of homemade soup for lunch and supper and please don't forget the chocolate dessert.
I think it's time to bring our dad into the picture. One of her brothers told her she needed to be at the baseball game in Hebron that night. Don't think she was interested in baseball but was curious on what was so special about a ballgame. My dad was there playing ball and when he saw her, he was smitten. He told Mom's brother and I quote "She can put her shoes under my bed anytime". So Alexander (Alex) Hausauer and Irene Wiege were married on October 21st, 1951 at the Hebron First Baptist Church. They had 2 daughters, Diane Susan and Paulette Fay. Mom and Dad lived in Hebron their entire adult life. Mom assisted her sister-in-law Florence Wiege in a catering business. They were known for their German Potato Salad, Rice Krispie Chicken, Deep Fried Turkey. When Florence retired, Mom kept catering until her girls told her it was time to hang up the apron. Mom made the best kuchen and glazed donuts, canned the best pickles and tomato soup. She always had what she called her fancy work, embroidered dishtowels, many crocheted doilies, and many quilted quilts.
Mom was a member of the First Baptist Church and the last living charter member of the Missionary Guild which she was a member for 80 Years.
Mom loved to play games and play cards, especially with her grandkids. It was a struggle to win a game cause she did not like to lose so you had to really pay attention.
Mom is survived by her daughters Diane Winterroth and Paulette Elder, 2 grandchildren Bobbi Jo (Ron) Birkholz and Rusty Allen (Amanda) Winterroth; 4 Great Grandchildren Alec Binstock, Lily Birkholz, Ava and Rex Winterroth; 3 Step Grandchildren, 10 Step Great Grandchildren, 7 Step great great grandchildren; 1 brother and sister-in-law Elmer (Delores) Wiege; 7 sisters-in-law Pauline Frank, Elsie (Wilbert) Opp, Ella Fandrich, Linda (Tom) Dallman, Anne, Nancy, Betty Mae Hausauer; Many many nieces and nephews and a few cousins.
Preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Magdalena; husband, Alex (2019); sons-in-law, Rex Winterroth (2006), Gary Elder (2020); brothers, John, Art (Florence), Louie (Clara), Herb (Dorothy), Emil ( Delores) Wiege; sisters, Adeline (Pete) Renner, Anna (John) Roth, infant sisters, Esther and Gertrude Wiege; in-laws, Phillip and Christina (Flemmer) Hausauer; Brother/Sister-in-laws: Carl (Ruth), David (Ann), Gary (Betty), Reinhardt (Wilma), Fred, Dale, Herb Hausauer, Ida (Alex) Voegele, Martha (Daniel) Huber, Viola (Otto) Martin, Edwin Frank, Wildet Fandrich, Clemens Flemmer; 1 step great grandson.
We would like to thank the Marian Manor Healthcare Center Staff for all the wonderful care they gave our mom, grandma and granny these past 5 years while she was a resident. She loved all the activities, especially BINGO and PINOCHLE, and anytime the little ones came over from the daycare to play parachute.
