Jean passed away on July 15, 2025 at Fallon Medical Complex.
Jean Gail (Morton) Lutts was born May 29, 1939, in Baker, Montana, to Robert “Bob” and Emma Mae (Kennedy) Morton. She was the youngest of four sisters. Jean grew up south of Baker, Montana, and attended school in Baker, graduating in 1957.
Jean first met Robert Lutts of Carlyle at a Farmer’s Union meeting when she was about nine or 10 and he was 19 or 20. They began going together in August of 1954 and announced their engagement at the Walter Spriggs home in Baker in June 1957, after going to a show at the Baker Drive-In theater. They were married on December 1, 1957, and honeymooned in the Black Hills. Robert and Jean made their home at his family’s place near Carlyle, 21 miles north of Baker, where they ranched and farmed and spent all 52 years of their marriage. Jean continued to live there until the fall of 2024.
Twins, Mary and Kenny, joined their family at the age of four in 1967. Amy was born in 1970, followed by Roy in 1972. The whole family was active in 4-H for many years, and Jean was also a long-time member of the Ollie Homemakers. Nephews Steve and Gerald Spriggs were also part of the family, spending a lot of time out at the ranch.
Jean was an avid reader and bird and wildlife watcher. She faithfully documented community and family happenings in her journals every day for decades, from births and deaths to weddings and brandings and who was visiting who. Her drawers full of journals contain a wealth of Ollie, Carlyle and surrounding area history from her unique perspective. Jean took great pride in recalling names and dates, always winning any contest of local trivia.
In the 1990’s after her kids grew older, Jean worked in Baker at the USDA Office and Quality Personal Care. When her granddaughter Ashlyn Kate was born in 2004, Jean became the official daycare center for the Lutts Ranch for the next decade-plus. Grandma’s plain noodles and meatloaf continue to be staples of the Lutts dinner table today. She could also make a first-rate angel food cake that wouldn’t last the day once her grandson Riley found it. Jean and her youngest granddaughter Keara spent hours playing go-fish and watching “Grandma’s shows” in their years together.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2009, daughter Amy in 2015, nephew Steve Spriggs in 2020, parents Bob and Emma Morton and stepmother Alvina Morton, sister Joyce Cook, and in-laws Rudolph and Gulnare Lutts. She is survived by son Ken (Sonya) of Spanaway, WA, daughter Mary Waggoner of Billings, MT, son Roy (Erin) Lutts of Carlyle, MT, niece-in-law Bonnie Spriggs of Victor, MT, nephew Gerald (Connie) Spriggs of Greeley, CO, sisters
Betty Hayes of Cowley, WY, and Edith Bridgewater of Billings, and grandchildren Kenya Lutts, Ashlyn, Riley and Keara Lutts, Brandon and Tyler Waggoner, and Chance Skartved.
