Mae passed away April 18, 2022 at St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson.

Mae was born in Belfield on December 11, 1928, the daughter of John and Louise (Meisner) Buckman. She was a graduate of Belfield High School. Mae continued her education at Dickinson Teachers College and Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska. Following college she taught grade school in Regent and Marmarth prior to teaching in Beach. She later taught Kindergarten at Sentinel Butte Public School.

In 1954, Mae was teaching in Beach when she was introduced to Jim Muckle by a fellow teacher, Marion, who was also Jim’s sister. Following a courtship, the couple was married on June 8, 1955 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Belfield. Their marriage was blessed with three children; James Jr., Thomas and Hannah.

Mae and James made their home on the Muckle Homestead where they raised their children. Mae was a devoted wife and mother. She was active in her faith community, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beach, where she was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years and she was a member of the church circle – Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. She also enjoyed her years with the women of “Thelen Homemakers”. In the late 1970s she was a Teacher’s Aide at Home on The Range. In later years, Mae worked for the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation in the Doll House. In their spare time, Mae and Jim enjoyed square dancing and visiting with neighbors and friends. In December 2002, they moved into Beach where they made their home until they retired and eventually moved into the Golden Valley Manor in Beach in 2014. As their health started to fail, St. Luke’s Home in Dickinson became their final home.

Mae will be dearly missed by her children, James Jr. (Donna) Muckle of Beach, Tom (Nona) Muckle of Spearfish, SD and Hannah (Patrick) Cleveland of Petersburg, NE; 14 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, eight great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Bonnie Buckman; sister and brother-in-law, Marion and Holger Johnson of Beach; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James (2021); parents, John and Louise Buckman; two grandsons, Samuel and Connor Cleveland; brothers, Vernon, Lewis, Clarence (Irene) Buckman; a niece, great-niece and four great-nephews.
