Robert Strommen

Funeral service for Robert G. Strommen "Bobby", 88, of New England, will be 10:00 am, Thursday, February 5, 2026 at Our Redeemer in New England with Pastor John Vanhanagon officiating. Burial will take place in Our Redeemer cemetery.

Visitation for Bobby will be 5:00-7:00 pm, Wednesday, February 4, 2026 at Stevenson Funeral Home in Dickinson with a prayer service being held at 6:00 pm.

Bobby passed away Wednesday, January 28, 2026, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Robert Garfield "Bobby" was born in New England on April 16, 1937, the son of Garfield and Harriett (Braaten) Strommen. He was the eldest of five children. He grew up on the family farm west of New England, attending country school before graduating in 1955 from New England High School. Bobby attended Dickinson State College from 1955 until Spring of 1957. He then worked on the family farm until he enlisted in the US Army in November of 1958. He served in Germany and was honorably discharged in August of 1960.

After completing his service, Bobby returned to the family farm in New England and shortly thereafter began his career as Slope County Auditor for the next 33 years. He had a passion for the land and continued to farm and ranch until he retired from the farm in 2010.

Drives in the country were a great joy, which often included frequenting his favorite lunch spots such as The Cowboy Cafe in Medora, Trapper's Kettle in Belfield, and Country Kitchen in Dickinson. He enjoyed the fundraising auctions for the Badlands Lutheran Bible Camp, especially bidding on pies. Bobby loved lemon meringue pie, a good hamburger, homemade donuts and Coca-Cola. Bobby was a traveler of the world. His frequent travel companions were his sisters, Roselyn and Elaine. He visited China, Norway, Egypt, several European countries, much of the western United States, and the Hawaiian Islands. His most recent trip was a return to Norway in 2024 for his nephew Grant's wedding, and commented he'd "like to go back again". He was always up for an adventure which included helicopter rides, ziplining, hot air ballooning, riding camels, hiking, and seeking out the best views that could be had. He was an avid bowler in his working years, and won many trophies while he was in bowling league. He had a soft spot for his outdoor cats, making sure they were well-fed, and warm in the winter. He was a self-made engineer, using the materials he had on hand to cobble together whatever project he was working on. Bobby loved watching his nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews at their events. He was very proud of his family and all their accomplishments. Bobby was a story-teller, a good listener, lived out his faith in his daily actions, and was generous to all. He was a life-long member of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in New England.

Bobby is survived by his brother, Larry (Doris) Strommen of Dickinson; sisters, Elaine Fritz of Rugby, ND, Roselyn (Kevin Berg) Strommen of Longmont, CO; sister-in-law, Sandi Strommen of Dickinson; nieces and nephews: Sheila Strommen of Medora, Shelley (Jim) Hansen of Broadus, MT, Shari (Troy Wolf) of NE, Janelle (Jon) Erickson of Bismarck, Chris (Laurie) Strommen of Dickinson, Curtis Strommen of Dickinson, Dana (Dan) Glasser of Dickinson, Rhonda Liberty (Justin Hoerner) of Mandan ND, David Strommen of Dickinson, Noelle (John) Strommen Fiore of NH, Jason (Rhonda) Fritz of Bismarck, Rachel (Jason) Freehauf of West Fargo, Jesse (Jessica) Fritz of Rugby, Hayley Berg of Steamboat, CO, Grant (Chelsea) Berg of Oakland, CA; cousin and good friend, Alan Strommen (St. Paul, MN) 34 nieces and nephews; 13 great-great nieces and nephews; many friends and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Garfield and Harriett Strommen; brother, Ronald Strommen; nephew, Cordell Strommen; and brother-in-law, Dennis Fritz.
