Sherill Paul Ungerecht was born on March 13, 1943, in Glen Ullin, North Dakota, to Paul and Ivy (Waechter) Ungerecht. He graduated from Glen Ullin High School in 1960 and went on to attend Jamestown College, where he earned his education degree and teacher’s certificate in 1965. Sherill also furthered his education while attending, UND, North Dakota State, and Minot State.

In the fall of 1965, Sherill began his long and impactful teaching career at Minto High School, where he taught for 33 years as an English and Social Studies Teacher. Sherill retired in 1998. He was a passionate coach, leading teams in Jr. High boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, and Varsity baseball. He was also a dedicated role model and mentor to generations of students and athletes.

At age 37, Sherill took up running to stay in shape for amateur basketball, and soon it became a lifelong passion. He competed nationally as a top-ranked age group runner, even in his 50s rising at 4 a.m. to run the country roads around Minto before heading to school. Among his many athletic achievements, he won the Pepsi Challenge in the 40-year-old group, earning a trip to Hawaii, and participated in over 20 races a year at his peak. He loved running through Spearfish Canyon, the Black Hills, and the bike trails of Minneapolis.

Sherill was also a devoted lay pastor, an avid golfer, and someone who deeply valued health, community, and faith. In the 1960’s Sherill even tried out for the Minnesota Twins. His most memorable race was the Border to Border Run in San Diego, a 10K race crossing into Tijuana, Mexico.

He is survived by cousins, Jerome (Pat) Kirchmeier of Bryan, TX, and Carol Erhardt of New Salem; other relatives, along with many dear friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Gary and James Ungerecht.
