Sister Dolores Heidt

Funeral Mass for Sister Dolores (Eugenia) Heidt, 92 of Dickinson will be Tuesday, September 15, 2026 at 10:30am (MT) at Assumption Abbey Church in Richardton. Vigil will be held at 6PM (MT) at the Stevenson Funeral Home. Viewing and visitation will be one hour prior to the Mass. Interment will be in the Benedictine Sisters' Cemetery, Richardton, ND.

Sister Dolores was born on a farm south of New England, North Dakota, on May 27, 1934, and baptized four days later, May 31. She was the twelfth of fourteen children, eleven sons and three daughters.

Her parents Albinus and Eugenia (Greff) Heidt had a farm in Hettinger County. Even though there were fourteen kids, work was not lacking for any of them. They had no electricity or water in the house and of course no telephone. Sister Dolores' job was carrying water for drinking, washing clothes and bathing.

Her activities revolved around home, school and church. She was born at home with the help of a mid-wife. She attended her first eight grades in a one-room school a quarter-mile from home.

In September of 1950, Sister Dolores entered the convent and attended high school at Sacred Heart Academy in Minot, ND. At that time it was not unusual to enter the convent at a young age, she was only 16 years old. With four other young women, she felt right at home. Her vocation was greatly influenced by her mother and Father Bolton. During this time, there was high school to complete and going through the steps to become a professed Sister.

Her early profession was being a primary teacher. She taught for twenty-five years, teaching first and /or second grade at Garrison, ND, and Little Flower and St. Leo's schools both in Minot, ND. During the summer, she was off to school to complete college, a Bachelor of Arts at Minot State College, Minot, ND, and College of Great Falls, Great Falls, MT.

After receiving her master's in religious education from Seattle University, Seattle, WA, Sister Dolores ministered in parish ministry at Corpus Christi, Bismarck, ND, and St. Mary's, Lemmon, SD. She was the hospital chaplain at Trinity Medical Center in Minot, ND, for approximately twenty-five years. She found this time rewarding and challenging. She also served on many boards during her life. Due to her connection with the Fort Berthold Indian Reservation, she received her Native American Name, Sweet Scented Woman. She celebrated her 70th Jubilee in June of 2022.

Sister Dolores retired to Sacred Heart Monastery in Richardton, ND, where she appreciated the time to rest, to do small jobs around the Monastery and especially time to read and pray. She entered the Richardton Health Center, Richardton, ND in February of 2018.

Sister Dolores is survived by her sister, Sister Lucille Heidt, Dickinson, ND; and sisters-in-law Rosemarie Heidt, Portland, Oregon and Donna Heidt, Eugene, Oregon; and numerous nephews and nieces. Her religious community members also survive her.

Preceding her in death were her parents Albinus and Eugenia Heidt, sister Leontine Gable; brothers, Cyriak, Adam, Kasper, Phillip, Frank, John, Edward, James, Richard, Father Charles and Donald.
