On October 12, 1960, Wally married the love of his life, Judy Hutmacher, at St. Edward's Church in Fayette. Together they made their home in Killdeer, where they lived for many years and raised their family.

In retirement, he enjoyed gold panning and was a member of the Sturgis Gold Mining Club.
A dedicated member of his community, Wally served with the volunteer fire department and ambulance service, was involved with the Saddle Club, Booster Club, and served as a Killdeer City Commissioner. He was also a member of the Elks, Pheasants Forever and the National Rifleman Association. His faith was an important part of his life, and he was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Killdeer.
